The Opening of the Terskiye Vedomosti Newspaper in 1868 as a Factor in the Socio-Cultural Policy of the Caucasian Administration

The article is devoted to an almost unexplored issue – the opening of the newspaper «Terskiye Vedomosti» in 1868, which played a significant role in the development of national identity of the peoples of the Tersk region. To achieve this goal, documentary materials from the archives of KabardinoBalkaria and North Ossetia were used. The issues of forming the staff of the editorial office and printing house, its technical re-equipment and financing are considered. The role of the head of the Tersk region,
M.T. Loris-Melikov, in organizing the press organ of the Caucasian administration and role of the fi rst editor A.-G. is highlighted. Kesheva’s role in choosing the editorial vector of the newspaper’s development, communication with readers, and attracting young mountain and Russian intellectuals from the North Caucasus: Ch.E. Akhriev, K.M. Atazhukin, D.S. Kodzokov, M.G. Baev, B. Gatiev, A. Pryanishnikov, N. Sapitsky, N. Semenov, V. Geevsky, A. Venerovsky, and others.
