The article is devoted to the study of the processes of natural population movement among the Balkars after their return to their homeland from places of deportation (Kazakhstan and Central Asia),
in the period between the All-Union population censuses of 1959 and 1970, and cultural construction associated with the restoration of the autonomy of the Balkar people. It is noted that in the studied intercensal period, the Balkars were characterized by a high birth rate and low mortality. It is indicated that these years
became a time of Balkar cultural revival, marked by a signifi cant increase in the educational level of the people, the formation and development of professional art, and the formation of a significant cohort of scientifi c and creative intelligentsia.
