Evolution of the Sanitary Aviation Units of the Red Army Air Forces in 1942–1943
The article considers the staff changes in the air ambulance of the Red Army Air Force in 1942–1943. The article analyses the potential of medical support and evacuation of the wounded in the ground forces based on the assessment of numerical and qualitative characteristics of air ambulance units.
Modifications in the logistical equipment of air ambulance squadrons and regiments are studied. Based on an extensive set of historical data, the publication highlights the combat performance of air ambulance pilots, identifies logistical and management problems, and demonstrates the vulnerability of the equipment. Examples of solutions found by designers, testers and pilots themselves to overcome the difficulties encountered are discussed. The statistical data presented on the volume of evacuated soldiers and officers of the Red Army emphasise the critical need for an operational system of medical support and evacuation at
armies and fronts, the role of which during the Great Patriotic War was performed by the air ambulance of the Red Army Air Force.
