Problems of Preserving the Ethnic Culture of Karachays in an «Urban Environment»

The issues of preserving the ethnic identity of the Karachai people in the context of
urbanization, standardization and globalization are considered. The author notes that the current state of Karachai culture is characterized by a synthesis of traditional and new features. The emergence of a new «urban» culture has led to a change in the ethnic identity of the people, which has increased the urgency of
the problem of self-identifi cation in a multiethnic environment and the preservation of ethnic culture.
